Check list for Exchange students before arrival
When you have been offered an exchange opportunity and decided to come to Oslo New University College (ONH) for the fall semester there are a few important things you have to do before arrival.
Your Checklist before arrival in Norway
Welcome to the beginning of an unforgettable journey! As you prepare to join us in Norway, here are some essential steps to ensure a smooth transition:
1. Find Your Acceptance Letter
This is crucial for your student residence permit application. Double-check your name and date of birth for accuracy.
2. Secure Student Housing
Apply for student accommodation. As soon as you know that you are going to Oslo, you should start checking the student accommodations out, as housing is allocated on a 'first-come, first-served' basis. The recommended deadline is June 1st.
We recommend that students apply for housing through SiO - Foundation for Student Life in Oslo.
Explore popular student housing options like “Stensberggata Student House” and “St. Hanshaugen Student Village”. They are conveniently located and surrounded by charming cafes and stores. For an even more central location, consider Anker Studentbolig in the heart of Oslo.
Remember to check your email and spam folder regularly for housing offers and act swiftly.

3. Student Residence Permit for Non-EU/EEA students
If you are a non-EU/EEA student, you will need to apply for a student residence permit. Please visit the Norwegian Directorate of Immigrations website (UDI) to read what requirements apply to you, and what steps you must take to apply for a residence permit.
Visit the UDI website for specific requirements and apply before July 1st.

Additional tips:
- Pack accordingly: Norwegian weather can be unpredictable - and cold in the fall and winter months. Pack layers, waterproof, warm clothing, and comfortable walking shoes.
- Plan your finances: It’s no secret that the cost of living in Norway is high. But Oslo is a student-friendly city where there are lots of ways to live and enjoy yourself without breaking the bank. You should have enough budget for food, housing and entertainment.
Arrival in Oslo
A Norwegian student buddy will meet you in the city centre. Please coordinate your arrival with your buddy in advance and contact them if you have any questions or problems.
Getting to your accommodation
From the airport, you can take the Flytoget Airport Express train to the city centre (Oslo S). From there, use public transport to get to your accommodation.
You can use the Ruter app to plan your journey and buy tickets for public transport in Oslo. Make sure to purchase your ticket before boarding.
Remember to bring your student ID when travelling on public transport. If you do not have a valid student ID, you will need to purchase an adult ticket.
