Den nettbaserte delen av kurset ble for første gang introdusert i 2014, og er resultat av at MSF (Leger Uten Grenser) ønsket å øke det faglige læringsutbyttet av oppholdet i Tanzania ved å introdusere sentrale temaer i forkant av reisen. Det forutsettes at nettundervisningen er gjennomgått før ankomst til Tanzania for å sørge for et faglig likt utgangspunkt blant kursdeltagerne, og for å gi alle en god start på kursoppholdet i Tanga.

Gjennom nettkurset får du en omfattende innføring i tropemedisin, med vekt på teoretiske aspekter. Kurset har artikler, oppgaver, henvisninger og filmer som dekker alle sentrale temaer innen faget. Det gir også den teoretiske bakgrunnen for det praktiske kurset som avholdes i Tanzania, slik at du får fullt utbytte av oppholdet i felten.  Den nettbaserte delen av  kurset vil være tilgjengelig for de som har fått plass og takket ja til tropemedisinkurset i god tid før avreise til Tanzania.

Informasjon om nettkurset og pålogging i vår e-læringsplattform, Qybele, sendes ut i god tid før avreise. Oslo Nye Høyskole har lang erfaring med nettundervisning, og undervisningen er meget fleksibel, slik at du selv bestemmer når og hvor du vil jobbe med stoffet.

Det anbefales å ankomme Tanga lørdag eller søndag før kursstart på mandag (overnatting på TICC er betalt for kursdeltagerne fra og med lørdagen før kursstart). Vi pleier å ha et "bli-kjent"-opplegg på søndag med blant annet båttur på det Indiske hav.

Endelig timeplan vil bli utdelt ved kursstart i Tanga. Vi gjør oppmerksom på at enkelte forandringer til oppsatt kursplan kan forekomme. Dr. Thomas Schwartz (spesialist i infeksjonsmedisin, Diakonhjemmet Sykehus), Dr. Ketil Størdal (pediater, professor 1, UiO), Dr. Trude Arnesen (spesialist i samfunnsmedisin og infeksjonskontroll, Folkehelseinstituttet), Dr. Per Gerlyng (spesialist i infeksjonsmedisin) er ansvarlige kursledere fra norsk side, og i Tanga samarbeider vi med National Institute for Medical research (NIMR), Tanga.

Oppholdet inkluderer klasseromsundervisning samt besøk til landsbyer, helsesentre og regionale sykehus. Kost/losji er inkludert i prisen. Vanligvis avholdes den praktiske delen av kurset to ganger i året.

Course in Tropical Medicine

Do you want to learn more about tropical diseases and health conditions in the tropics? Now you have the opportunity to learn about this in the tropics, where both diseases and patients are located. Our course in tropical medicine consists of both online learning and a practical, compulsory field study in Tanga, Tanzania and is approved by Medicins sans Frontiers (MSF).

ONH Education, a sub-unit of Oslo New University College, organizes the course in tropical medicine in collaboration with the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) and Tanga International Competence Centre (TICC). The course has a special focus on malaria, HIV and TB and introduction to Public Health (including Reproductive Health Care (RHC)/Maternal/Child Health). Please note that places are limited.

Who is this Course for?

If you would like to work in the tropics, e.g. in non-profit organizations such as Medicins sans Frontiers and the Red Cross, or if you are already working in the health care system, this course is perfect for you. More and more people travel to the tropics and will both needing advice and vaccinations before traveling, and medical knowledge about diseases they might get during the trip. You must be a medical doctor or nurse by profession, or hold a professional health background.

It is required that participants are fluent in Norwegian, Danish or Swedish. 

Practical Information

• The practical part of the course in Tanzania consists of approximately 120 hours over 3 weeks.
• The teaching language is mainly English.
• In Tanzania the teaching takes place mainly in Tanga International Competence Centre.
• You will have weekends off.
• In addition to the practical part, there will be online learning before travelling to Tanzania.
• There will be an online exam after the Tanzania trip is completed.
• There is rolling admission but a limited number of places.

The price for the course includes full board and accommodation in twin rooms in Tanzania. Beverages, Internet and travel expenses are additional costs. Oslo New University College reserves the right of sufficient number of participants.

We will send more information about the course program once this is finalized. Your registration is not binding until you receive a possible offer with a courses contract. To accept, you will be asked to return your contract and pay the deposit of NOK 3 000 within the deadline in the offer letter. The rest of the course fee is payable in two installments before departure to Tanzania.

Online part of the Course

The online part of the course was first introduced in 2014, and is the result of the Medicines sans Frontiers (MSF) wanting to increase the academic learning outcomes of the stay in Tanzania by introducing key issues in advance of the practicals. The online course must be completed before arriving in Tanzania to provide an equal, academic level amongst the participants, and to give everyone a good start t in Tanga. Information about the online course and log in-information to access our e-learning platform, Qybele, will be sent out in good time before departure. Oslo Nye University College has extensive experience with online teaching.

In this part of the course you will receive a comprehensive introduction to tropical medicine, with emphasis on theoretical aspects. The course has articles, exercises, references and films covering all central themes. It also provides the theoretical background for the practical course which will be held in Tanzania, to ensure you will take full advantage of the field trips. The online part of the course will be available for those who have been placed and accepted the tropical medicine course in good time before leaving for Tanzania.

Upon your return from Tanzania, there will be an online exam.

Field Study in Tanzania

The final schedule will be handed out at the start of the course in Tanga. Please note that some changes to the scheduled course plan may occur. Dr. Thomas Schwartz (OUS) and Dr Per Gerlyng (LDS) are responsible course leaders from Norway and in Tanga, we collaborate with the National Institute for Medical research (NIMR), Tanga. The practical course includes classroom instruction as well as visits to villages, Health Centers and regional hospitals.
