This course focuses on how digital technologies transform organizations’ business models as well as reshape their relationship with important groups of stakeholders such as customers, business partners, and competition. You will learn how organizations’ assumptions about innovation, data, and value creation change because of digitalization.

During the course you will learn how to recognize opportunities digitalization provides to organizations and how to effectively manage business processes under digital transformations.

The course concludes by presenting students with a framework for analyzing the effects of digital transformation in a given organization. The course combines theoretical knowledge from the fields of digital marketing, management, data science, and strategy. The course features multiple interviews with managers from various industries in private sector in order to highlight professional relevance of course material.  

After completing this course, the student is expected to have acquired the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge 

  • Understands key concepts of digitization, digitalization, and digital transformation. 
  • Has a good understanding of the variety of digital technologies that organizations use to innovate and develop their business models.  
  • Understands the concept of “(digital) business model” and knows various frameworks for analyzing “(digital) business models”. 
  • Knows types of (digital) business models and its’ characteristics 
  • Has knowledge about how organizations exploit digital opportunities (connectivity, automation etc.) to innovate their business models 
  • Knows assumptions about customers, competition, innovation, data, and value in digitally transformed world 
  • Understands how digital transformation affects organization’s relationship with various groups of stakeholders (customers, partners, competition, state, community etc.) 

Skills 

  • Can identify and explain the purpose of digital technologies organizations use in their business models. 
  • Can analyze an organization’s business models using frameworks learned in the course. 
  • Can explain how organizations use digital technologies for innovation, value creation, managing customer relationships, addressing competition, and managing data for value creation. 
  • Can analyze and communicate how digital technologies change managers’ assumptions about customers, competition, innovation, data, and value.  
  • Can analyze and communicate the effects of digital transformation in a given organization by referring to frameworks learned in the course.  

Competence 

  • Can communicate using the terms about digital transformation learned in the course. 
  • Understands the importance of implementing digital for managing an organization’s business model (e.g., in terms of sustaining strategic competitive advantage, innovation management etc.). 
  • Has knowledge about (ethical) challenges that digital transformations raise (e.g., digital stress, digital surveillance, data security, etc.).

Exam 

  • 48-hour home exam in form of a written assignment. In the written assignment the questions require open-text answers based on theory and business cases (100% of the total grade). 
  • The written assignment is censored and given a graded grade, A - F.
