This course provides an introduction to various digital technologies and technological trends. The course gives the student foundational knowledge, skills and competence about how digital technologies shape various organizations and institutions. The course combines research perspectives from information systems, information technology, and human-computer interaction academic fields. 

In this course, students learn about digital technologies such as artificial intelligence, Internet of things, wearables, big data, robots, chatbots, digitally extended realities, blockchain, project management software, and others. The course also focuses extensively on application of digital technologies in organizations as students learn how digital technologies create value as well as what challenges they raise. 

Knowledge

  • Has knowledge about core digital technologies and contemporary trends in digitalization.   
  • Has knowledge of various areas of application of digital technologies in organizations.   
  • Understands the prerequisites for the successful implementation of core digital technologies in organizations.   
  • Understands how digital technologies create value as well as pose challenges in organizations (e.g., for employees, management, customers, etc.) and society. 

Skills 

  • Can explain how core digital technologies create value in organizations and evaluate the value creating potential of a given core digital technology for an organization.   
  • Can explain how digital technologies are implemented and used in various professional contexts and organizations (e.g., in health and education sectors, law enforcement, customer relationship management, advertisement, construction industry etc.).   
  • Can provide organizations with actionable advice on how to successfully implement digital technologies for value creation. 

Competence 

  • Knows about relevant developments in the area of digitalization.   
  • Can discuss central subject areas such as theories, problems and solutions.   
  • Can discuss the role of digitization in an organization.   
  • Has knowledge of security and ethical issues related to the introduction of digital technologies. 

Course work 

Approved work requirements are a prerequisite for being able to take the exam. The course work in this course is: 

  • A short case analysis on a course topic (750 words) 

Exam

Individual written exam, 3 hours. The exam content relates to lectures and course curriculum. The exam content is the learning outcomes.

The exams are censored and graded, A – F.
